This is a Sanskrit word meaning "without injury". It is the doctrine of non-violence which is applied in Hinduism and Jainism to all created things.

The idea at the basis of ahimsa is that "all life is sacred" and that no Holy person can take life. To Quote Mahatma Gandhi "Our religion is based on ahimsa which in its active form is nothing but love".
